Background:

Bulldozers are earthmoving machine used in numerous industries and applications, including construction, mining, agriculture and landscaping. They were originally used by farmers as tractors to plow and clear land. Over time, dozers have evolved to accommodate a variety of environments and applications with high levels of efficiency. Today, bulldozers are used for everything from building roads to clearing building sites.

It has a large, wide, and flat blade at the front that can be angled and lowered to push large quantities of soil, sand, rocks, debris, and other materials.

Problem Statement:

In this demonstration exercise dozing of various bulk material using EDEM-OptiStruct(OS), 2-way coupling is analyzed for

  • Bulk material flow over the blade
  • Blade strength
  • Blade wear

Key Points to be Noted:

  • The CAD model chosen in the simulation is a simplified, generic and a representative model
  • Material models are chosen from GEMM database
  • Linear steel material is assigned to blade

Prerequisites:

EDEM-OS 2-way coupling supports the software version specified below or later versions

  • EDEM – 2024
  • OptiStruct – 2024
  • SimLab – 2024

EDEM Simulation Setup:

OptiStruct Simulation Setup:

Simulation Results:

The vector plot shows that different bulk material profile over the same bucket design under various material behavior

Simulation Files:

EDEM Decks: Consists of 3 decks i.e Free Flowing, Moderately Cohesive and Very High Cohesive material setup

Dozer Input: Consists of Dozer Bucket mesh

Dozer Simulation Setup: SimLab file consists of the simulation setup
