Geometry moves in Inspire Studio much slower than in EDEM

Dear all,

I am trying to use Inspire Studio to render my EDEM simulation. The geometry moves very little compared to the movement observed in EDEM. My guess is the velocity of the geometry in Inspire Studio is somehow wrongly imported due to different units. In my EDEM setting, the velocity is 0.01 m/s which might become 0.01 cm/s in Inspire Studio.

Is there a way to fix this and get the right geometry movement?

Attached are the snapshots of the initial and final geometry locations shown both from EDEM and Inspire Studio. No particles in the system. The geometry is imported using a step file.

Best regards,

Hao

    Hi Spiros-Foivos,

Sure, attached are the zipped EDEM and Inspire Studio model (in the same folder as the .h5 files)

    Thanks.

    Hi Hao Shi

We tested the model and it looks to be a bug on Inspire Studio 2023 & 2023.1 that we are going to address.

Can you please download and use InspireStudio 2022.3 ? There you should have the correct behaviour as you can see from the image bellow.

    Hi Hao,

Inspire render reads H5 file data, it means inspire is not solving instead it reads the results of EDEM simulation.

Hence Inspire Render doesn't have any control over the results. It helps to record high-quality videos and images. I feel in your case you have to increase the number of frames to record so that it will be faster.

You can go through the below video's to understand inspire render in a better way

    Hi Prasad,

Thanks for the links to the tutorials, but they do not solve my problem.

I just performed a small test, where I removed the particles from the system and increased the snapshots/frames from 200 to 2000. The outcomes are given in the attachments (I added to the original question post). You can see the difference between EDEM and Inspire Studio.

The geometry was imported using a step file and I had to specify the dimension unit to mm during the importing to have the setup correct.

    Best,

    Hao

    Hi Hao,

Just want to know one more point is what is the target save interval used in EDEM? and How long you ran the simulation

    Thanks,

    Hi Prasad,

The simulation is 20 seconds with a 0.02s target save interval.

Thanks Spiros, indeed 2022.3 version works fine.

BTW, I also see a size difference between the installation files that I downloaded: 2022.3 (3.3GB) and 2023 (1.3GB).

    Best regards,

    Hao

    Hi Hao,

Happy to hear that it worked for you in 2022.3 as well !

Indeed the 2023 installation file is smaller since the Assets are downloaded optionally later after the installation. This doesn't have to do with the above issue though.

We are here to help if anything else arises

    Thanks,

    Spiros

    Hi Spiros,

Just one quick question: is it possible to render the snapshot with options such as clipping planes etc., like in EDEM we can add a clip plane and see through the materials during the simulations.

    Regards,

    Hao

    Hi Hao,

Sure, you may create a section cut on Inspire Studio from this panel image

However the ability to render on the section cut was added on Inspire Studio 2023.

To avoid the issue with the geometry not moving properly you can follow a 2 step approach.

    1) Open Inspire Studio 2022.3 and Import the original h5 EDEM files. Then go to File-> Save As to an .iStudio model.

    2) Open Inspire Studio 2023 , and then apply the section cut from there and finish of the rendering there (The animation should be proper because we saved it as an iStudio file)

Let me know how this works out

    Thanks,

    Spiros

    Hi Spiros,

Just tried the steps you told and the materials set in 2022.3 were not loaded correctly in 2023, they all became no materials assigned, so I had to manually assign the materials back again.

The section cut seems to work fine in 2023. I also see this button in 2022.3, but it does not work even when the cut plane is set.

    Regards,

    Hao
