Apply symmetry restrictions over design space or not
Hi,
I've been working on the topology optimisation of a symmetric component. The objective is to minimise its mass, and stress constraints are applied. (eating away material from the design space without compromising the material integrity.
To reduce the computational load, I've removed half of the geometry and applied displacement constraints to mimic the symmetry effect. However, I don't know if I should use these restrictions for both design and non-design spaces or only for the non-design space.
I tried both ways, obtaining different outcomes (Left: restrictions only over the non-design space. Right: restrictions over design and non-design space.)
Both appear to be valid. Therefore, I don't comprehend if it's better to define this type of restriction over the design space or not.

Symmetry conditions should be applied to the whole model, irrespective if design space or not.
