Altair provides a cloud-based license server solution known as Altair Managed Licensing via Altair One that is used to provide the Academic Edition to Universities, Schools and Student Teams. If you have internet access, the units can be used to run all applications. There is no VPN necessary.

Step 1 – Create an Altair One Account and Acquire Altair Units.

In order to use the Academic Edition through managed Altair Licensing system you must first have a valid Altair One user account, and your University account must have purchased and enabled Altair Units. Check with your Faculty and IT administrator and find out if your university already has Altair Units, if not They can request here.

  • Click Here to learn how to create an Altair One Account.

Once you have a valid Altair One account and have purchased Altair Units, you should be able to see the Altair Units from the dashboard available from the Manage License menu in Altair One. There are both administrative functions (if you are one of your University's designated admins) and user functions.

Step 2 – Find and Download required Software from the Altair one Marketplace.

Once Your University has Altair units, you can explore, find and download the Altair software of interest and related documentation from Altair One Marketplace. Marketplace lists more than a hundred software applications from categories such as Optimization, CAD, data analytics, design, IoT, etc.

Step 3 – Activate your software with your Altair Units from Altair one.

To utilize your purchased units on your downloaded software, each machine you wish to use your units from must be authorized prior to running any client applications. This can be done in two different ways. The default method to access an Altair license is directly from the application License Setup dialog, this is available in HyperWorks, the Inspire Suite, SimLab, and SimSolid. For the other applications, the Altair License Utility is used.

  • Click Here for how to access licenses from an application.
  • Click Here for how to access the licenses from the Altair License Utility.
  • Click Here for how to access the licenses from the Altair License Utility on the command line, and for the Faculty or the IT Administrators to activate all the machines in their lab by themselves.

Step 4 - Add, modify details and remove users of your organization.

You are now ready to add more users to your account to use the academic edition, you can add users one by one or import an entire group of users from a CSV file that contains their name and email address to pre create an account for them and send them an invite.

  • Click Here for how to Manage Users of your University Account in Altair One

Step 5 – Restrict your Altair Units to a specific group in your University.

Your University account in Altair one will also accommodate all students and faculty from your university who use the free Student Edition. The Student Edition is activated with a unique license key provided to every current and enrolled student and faculty to use on their personal computers.

  • Click Here to learn more about, request and access the free student edition.

Hence, the purchased Altair Units may have to be restricted to a class, cohort or a research group etc. Faculty and IT administrators who administer the University account in Altair One can restrict access to Altair Units.

  • First Create a Group of Users and Assign your Licenses to the group - Click Here
  • Then in License Priority restrict licenses to Group Users - Click Here
