How to Avoide Shear and Volumetric Locking, and Hourglassing in OptiStruct
Hello everyone,
I’m using OptiStruct for linear and nonlinear static simulations, and I’ve been researching some common numerical issues. I understand that fully integrated elements, especially lower-order elements, can exhibit shear locking when dealing with pure bending scenarios. Additionally, these fully integrated elements can demonstrate volumetric locking when analyzing incompressible or nearly incompressible materials.
I’m curious about how OptiStruct specifically mitigates these problems. What techniques are used within the software to avoid or minimize shear and volumetric locking?
Furthermore, I’d also like to understand how OptiStruct handles the issue of hourglass modes. What strategies does it employ to prevent these non-physical deformations?
Any insights or best practices regarding these topics would be greatly appreciated. I’m aiming to improve the accuracy and reliability of my simulations, and understanding these mechanisms is crucial for that.
Thanks in advance for your help!
