1D Non-linear Pretension Results

I have a simple model of a bolted flange. I'm using CBEAM elements to represent the bolts and using a PTFORCE load to apply pretension to the bolts. The pretension is reacted by contact between the flange faces.

If I run the model as a linear static problem, it behaves like I would expect, but when I run it as a non-linear static problem, I am having some trouble accessing the internal element forces to verify that my preload is working as intended.

The non-linear model runs without errors, but when I load the results into HyperView (loading the *.fem as the model and the *.h3d as the results file with advanced math enabled), I don't get any results (the N/A below) when I request element force vectors.

If I changed the output request from TENSOR to DIRECT, I can plot the results as a contour, but in some instances it would be nice to have the vector displays (see below for an example where I ran it as a linear static model).

    Hi Alan,

Looks like you want to check the preloading forces in the bolts.

When you have 1D or 3D pretension bolts in model, OS creates a *.secres file (ascii file), that gives the PRETENS force results. You can read that file in HyperGraph.

(You can also request PRETBOLT option to get a *.pret file that shows the pretension forces/adjustments).

Hope this is what you are looking for,.

    Thanks,

    Rumpa
