topology optimization with CHBDYE elements

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to set up a model for an optimization problem and in the model I have CHBDYE surface elements for the heat convection. When I try to run the optimization, I get the error message 'CHBDYE surface element can't exist in topology or free-size design domain.' Does it mean that I can't have those elements on my design space or should I define them in another way?

Best Regards

Mert

    Hi Mert,

    As you can see from the message that  topology/free size is not supported when the convective surface is in design space.

    Hi Mert,

    I know that you would have figured out a way to solve that problem. I had the same issue with my optimization. Recently, I got a solution for that problem. I am giving it so that it could be helpful to some one else. Analysis --> Control cards --> Debug. In ARG1 give 'TTPCHBDY' and in ARG2 give '1.0', give '1' for Number_ of_debugs. Click return to save that card. This made my optimization run when the error showed up.

    Regards,

    Hello experts!

    I just wonder if 8 year later this problem has been solved. Can we use topology optimization with convection?

    I am using this tutorial from Simlab: SimLab Tutorials - Coupled Linear Structural Thermal Analysis and I include the basic topology optimization formulation for the structural linear static subcase:

    1. Find \rho
    2. Minimize the compliance of a static subcase
    3. Subject to: volume fraction <= 0.5

    However, the same error appears.

    Does anyone know how can I solve this problem in Simlab?

    I appreciate any help.

    Best regards.
