How to model spring?

Hi
 I have a general question. I was wondering how springs are modeled. For instance an assembly that consists actual spring.
How they should be modeled modeled? should the spring be meshed or it should be replaced by specific type of element? what kind of analysis is usually performed? what are the inputs and out puts?
Is there any tutorial related to spring modelling?
I appreciate if you give me some explanation in this regard.
