Coupling AcuSolve and EDEM

Question

Dear Altair Team,

We meet problems when coupling AcuSolve and EDEM in SimLab and need your support.The coupled simulation cannot be paused but only terminated. Could we resume the simulation from the last time step after terminating the coupling?

Thank you very much for your explanation. We will carry out relevant trials accordingly.

In addition, we have reviewed the tutorial you shared earlier regarding the coupled restart of AcuSolve and EDEM. We noticed that the AcuSolve restart workflow demonstrated in the tutorial is operated on the HyperMesh CFD platform. Currently, we run coupled simulations of AcuSolve and EDEM using SimLab.

We would like to enquire whether coupled restarts for AcuSolve-EDEM are supported within SimLab. If this function is available, could you please advise whether the restart procedure is identical to that on HyperMesh CFD? We would appreciate it if you could share the corresponding tutorial for coupled restarts in SimLab.

Hi Yu,

We can't resolve the flow around the particle shape in a 2-way coupled simulation. You could look at exporting the particles from EDEM as STL files and then importing this to AcuSolve as a geometry.

This is valid if the particles are static or semi-static and then you can resolve the flow around the particle geometries.

Which particle shapes do you have?  The current in-built script exports spheres/multi-spheres shapes and there are plans to extend this to polyhedral, but that can also be done via EDEMpy.

Dear Khoi,

Thank you very much for sharing the tutorial. We have conducted tests following its instructions.

We notice that the immersed wall method demonstrated in the tutorial is applied to directly resolve the flow field around fan structures, rather than resolving the flow field surrounding particles in coupled simulations.

We plan to adopt the immersed wall function to perform fully-resolved simulations of particle sedimentation inside a water tank. Specifically, particles will be defined in EDEM. The computational domain of the water tank will be meshed with cell size smaller than 10 times the particle diameter, and particle surfaces will be set as immersed walls, as shown in the figure below. Could you please confirm whether this configuration is feasible?
