Radioss optimization error

Hi,

I'm trying to run an simple toy topography optimization problem in Radioss where a pressure is applied dynamically to a square plate (solid elements). When running the RADOPT file I receive the following error. How can I understand what is happening here?

*** ERROR # 4306 ***
No ESL is generated by SUBCASE 1 to do optimization.

*** PROGRAM STOPPED: FATAL ERROR(s) ENCOUNTERED.

Hi,

First would you please clarify: are you trying to perform topography optimization or topology optimization (usually used for solid elements)?
Topography is being used with shell elements.

To understand better the message you are getting, you would need to detail more the optimization case (and share the radopt file).

By the way, note that Radioss Optimization keywords are now considered obsolete. So even if you are able, in the end, to run the optimization case, the results may be limited.

I'm trying to perform topography optimization. According to the documentation Topography Optimization,

Although topography optimization is primarily a tool for creating bead type reinforcements in shell elements, it can accommodate solid models, as well. Many pattern grouping options (such as planar and cylindrical) are intended to be used with solid models since they effectively reduce 3D problems into 2D ones.

In my case, the loading conditions require the use of solid elements, although the base geometry is just a steel plate. Is this suitable?

What are the limitations on the Radioss optimization?

The main limitation is that ESL method that was implemented did not give significant results for highly non-linear and dynamic cases. Then subsequently, developments have been stopped. So there is no maintenance of this approach, which is another limitation.

Today, Genesis ESLDynamic is developed instead and Radioss format is now available with version 2025 of Genesis.
