The Community Team would like to introduce the July Champion of the Month, Dr. Luca Cavagna @Luca Cavagna who has vast experience as an aerospace engineer in the field of aeroelasticity , flight/ground loads and simulation.
Luca Cavagna graduated in 1998 from Politecnico di Milano in Aerospace Engineering with a thesis on transonic flutter assessment by means of CFD. He developed a framework for aeroelastic analysis based on CFD for AleniaAermacchi (now Leonardo). He then obtained a PhD in Aerospace Engineering. During this period, he developed NeoCASS, a framework to allow medium fidelity aeroelastic analysis in the aircraft conceptual design phase (an old open-source copy is available from www.neocass.org). His research has been cited over 700 times, confirming his positive impact in the field of aeroelasticity.
He then moved to Sweden at FOI (Swedish Defense Research Agency) to enhance the in-house CFD solver Edge with aeroelastic and aerothermoelastic features. In 2011, he was presented with the “Access to Space Aerothermodynamics” award by the European Space Agency at the 7th European Symposium on Aerothermodynamics for Space Vehicles.
In 2014, Dr. Cavagna moved to Pialtus in Switzerland to work as a loads engineer and ground loads simulation expert on the PC-24 and PC-21. After almost ten years, in 2023 Dr. Cavagna joined Radia in Colorado to work as ground loads simulation expert on the largest cargo aircraft ever built: the WindRunner.
“I use MotionView and MotionSolve daily for the development of the WindRunner. I have developed user-defined oleo models, aerodynamic forces based on CFD data and all the bookcases required by authorities for certification. All the loads are defined by means of static and dynamic simulations by means of MotionSolve. I use Compose to create scripts to manage MotionSolve output and create load cards for our Finite Element Model for structural sizing and assessment. I use Twin Activate to create FMU for engines and control systems to be connected to MotionSolve.”
Dr. Cavagna also uses Inspire and OptiStruct for component optimization, and during the development of the new loft for the WindRunner, he also used FlightStream for the preliminary sizing of its H-tail.
Dr. Cavagna interests include nutrition and weightlifting, and he enjoys spending time with his two poodles 🐩.
Please join the Community team in congratulating Dr. Cavagna @Luca Cavagna and thanking him for his willingness to share his extensive knowledge and expertise with other members of the Community .
