The aim of this article is to show the different type of sequence of drops and step by step procedure used in model setup by using HyperMesh and Radioss solver.
Why
This sequence of drops is done on a single part / assembly to validate it for the shocks what it may face during it lifetime or while transporting from manufacturing line to end customer.
Applications
- Mainly electronic devices like mobile phone or tablet or home appliance like washing machine or refrigerator will be drop tested at various orientation.
- In some of the Safety regulation in Automotive and Heavy engineering require multiple loading to be applied in a sequential manner.
Software used
- Altair Radioss version 2022.3 onwards used as a solver.
- Altair HyperMesh version 2022.3 onwards used for pre and post processing.
Different type of sequential impact analysis
There are two types of Sequential drop analysis.
Type 01 - Object/Assembly is fixed, and multiple impactors will be made to impact. The positions of these impactors are known prior to the impacts
Type 02 - An object has to fall on a rigid surface multiple times with the same or different orientation.
Type 01 – Multiple Impactors Drop
Type 02 – Water Tank Corner Drop and face Drop

Conclusion
- This study demonstrates how to use Altair HyperMesh(for model setup) and Altair Radioss to simulate a multiple drops of impactors and sequential drops of a water tank for different positions / orientations.
- Multiple drops of impactors can be simulated using multiple engine files.
- Sequential drops of water tank for different orientation is simulated using State (.sta) files
- The models presented in this article do not intend to replicated any specific geometry and is used just as a showcase
