Sand Bashing Demo with EDEM Multiphysics

Driving a vehicle over sand dunes is called as sand bashing and it is also known as dune bashing.

Sand bashing helps to:

  • Predict the impact forces
  • Obtain the body deformation
  • Understand the skid plate wear
  • Access structural strength

Simulation Methodology:

Sand bashing is carried out using three methodologies such as:

Case-1: EDEM+ MotionSolve:

  • EDEM is used to model sand and MotionSolve is used to model the 4-wheeler with vehicle motion
  • Vehicle chosen as a rigid body

Case-2: EDEM+ MotionSolve (Deformable Body):

  • EDEM is used to model sand and MotionSolve is used to model the 4-wheeler with vehicle motion
  • Sand impact force is obtained as an output
  • Hood and Skid plate modeled as deformable bodies

Case-3: EDEM+ OptiStruct:

  • EDEM is used to model sand and OptiStruct is used to model bumper and hood assembly
  • Sand impact force is obtained as an output
  • Bumper and hood modeled as deformable bodies
