Background:

Bulldozers are earthmoving machine used in numerous industries and applications, including construction, mining, agriculture and landscaping. They were originally used by farmers as tractors to plow and clear land. Over time, dozers have evolved to accommodate a variety of environments and applications with high levels of efficiency. Today, bulldozers are used for everything from building roads to clearing building sites.

It has a large, wide, and flat blade at the front that can be angled and lowered to push large quantities of soil, sand, rocks, debris, and other materials

Problem Statement:

In this demonstration exercise dozer blade using EDEM-OS, 2-way coupling is analyzed for

  • Bulk material flow over the blade
  • Blade strength
  • Blade wear

Key Points to be Noted:

  • The CAD model chosen in the simulation is a simplified, Generic and a Representative model
  • Only blade is chosen for the simulation as the focus of the study is strength of the blade
  • Linear steel material is assigned to blade

Prerequisites:

  • EDEM – 2024
  • OptiStruct – 2024
  • SimLab – 2024

EDEM Simulation Setup:

  • Define the bulk material properties
  • Define the Particle to Particle and Particle to geometry Interactions
  • Define the particle shape, size and its distribution
  • Create a box with below dimension
    • Length= 5 Meter
    • Width = 5 Meter
    • Height= 0.5 Meter
  • Transform the box in X-axis to 2.6 Meter
  • Create a volume packing with 60% solid fraction
  • Define particle-to-Particle and Particle-to-Geometry as HM-JKR physics model
  • Define the simulation setup such as
    • Raleigh Time Step = 20 %
    • Simulation time = 5 sec
    • GPU solver with CPU’s=6
  • Run the Simulation
  • Export the Simulation Deck at time step = 0 sec
  • Open the Exported simulation deck
  • Delete the volume factory
  • Uncheck the face1 of the box
  • Switch on the coupling server

OS Simulation Setup:

  • Import the given .fem file and the fem file consists of
    • 2D and 3D mesh of Dozer blade
    • 1D elements such as Rbe2 elements
  • Select all bodies to define solution as Explicit Dynamics
  • Define settings such as
    • Solver Settings
    • Result Request
    • Format and Execute Option
  • Define SPC and Enforced displacement on 1D-element/ rigid node
  • Create Coupled Solution
  • Define Coupled time step
