Altair Student License Basic Troubleshooting
- The Altair Student Edition license is a node-locked license - a license that will work only on one machine whose Ethernet ID was entered while requesting.
- By downloading the software and license file you agree to not use the software for commercial purposes and to not install the software on any corporate machines.
Activating the software using the student license file.
The license file should be placed into a folder that will not be moved or changed. Every time the software starts up, it will look for this file to verify your license so you cannot move the file around on your computer.
Place the license file in some other folder that you will not move or change the name, then you need to direct the Altair software to the location of this license file. This is done by setting an Environment Variable. Follow the instructions below to set the Environment Variable.
Activate by setting an environment variable:
In Windows 10, Go to Settings -> System -> About -> System Info -> Advanced System Settings.
Click the Environment Variables button, and add a new User or System level environment variable with the New button. Add the variable name as ALTAIR_LICENSE_PATH, click Browse File, browse to the location that the license is stored and select it.
Activate by placing in security folder:
Place the license file into the Altair_installation_directory/security folder. The programs automatically look here and as long as its named correctly then you will be all set.
Default location of the Altair Security Folder shown above.
Activate by using the License Setup Dialog in the tool:
You can also just browse to the license file in the license set up window > and click activate.
Trouble Shooting License Errors
The file extension should be named: .dat
By default, Windows does not always display file extensions like the “.dat” in this name.
Make sure you do not add a second .dat to the name.
One common error is the license file is named: dat.dat by mistake.
You can turn on “View file name extensions” to verify the name is correct.
The next most common error is that the hostid (Ethernet ID) used has a typo or was the wrong one.
You need to confirm if the Ethernet address in the license file is the correct one and matches the one in your machine.
When you open the license file in a text editor you will see an Ethernet address there in a line that says "ETHERNET =
The Ethernet ID is the ID of your machine which is exactly 12 hexadecimal numbers. For example D4WRF478F398
Run ipconfig/all in command window and check for physical address under Ethernet adapter local area connection
The listed physical address under Ethernet adapter local area connection should be used to generate the license file, if there is no listing of Ethernet adapter local area connection, the address under Wireless Adapter LAN Wifi must be used.
That means if the address provided as above does not match the one in the license file, please request for the license file again with the correct Ethernet ID here https://studentedition.altair.com/
Students can submit up to 5 requests, in special cases this limit can be increased.
My computer will not let me place a file in the Programs Folder on the C-drive; I do not have the proper administrative privileges on my PC. Or, for some other reason, you do not want to put the file in this folder.
Place the license file in some other folder that you will not move or change the name. The final step is that you need to direct the Altair software to the location of this license file. This is done by setting an Environment Variable. Follow the instructions below to set the Environment Variable.
To set an environment variable:
In Windows 10, Go to Settings -> System -> About -> System Info -> Advanced System Settings.
Click the Environment Variables button, and add a new User or System level environment variable with the New button. Add the variable name as ALTAIR_LICENSE_PATH, click Browse File, browse to the location that the license is stored and select it.
Troubleshooting problems with the hostid tool for the software request
When running the hostid tool for the software request, I get all zeros for the id or the tool will not run.
The host ID is the Physical Address (or MAC address) of the main network adapter.
Open a “Command Prompt” Window on your Windows PC. To do this; type “cmd” (without the parentheses) in the search line at the bottom left of your screen, and press enter.
Type “cmd” (without parentheses) and hit enter
Command Prompt Window will look like this:
Next, type “ipconfig/all” at the command prompt and hit enter
Depending on your, computer, you will get a list of network hardware information that looks something like the images shown below.
If your command prompt window is small, you will need to scroll up to see all the information. Look for the heading: “Ethernet adapter Ethernet”. The Physical Address listed under this heading should be your hostid.
If you do not see a listing like above, a sure-fire way is to use the address under Wireless Adapter LAN Wifi
I have typed ipconfig/all at the command prompt and I have too many choices
Try typing: getmac/v
This should return a shorter list of hardware information. The 12-digit code on the Ethernet line should be your hostid. See below.

Hello Rahul,
I created a file with some common problems that students in my classes have experienced when going through the download/installation/activation process for the Altair software. This may be of general interest to student users from other universities also.

Hello to all.
I have installed yesterday the Educational release of Altair HyperWorks, and all programs run correctly except in the case of RADIOSS solver. I am trying to run some models of official trainings, and all of them fails due to a license error. I am writing down below these lines the error, because the number is different from other users.
I hope you can help me to solve this issue. I have downloaded and installed previously RADIOSS 2020.1, and the license file is generated for release 2021. I do not think that the error comes with this, because the other software versions are working OK with the release 2020.1 also downloaded.
ERROR : 20.0 Feature Radioss or HWRadioss not found on license file
Kind Regards.

Hi,
From your question it appears that you have installed the full version of Radioss 2020.1 , note that the student edition contains Radioss within the HyperWorks Student Edition and will not work with the commercial separate version of Radioss.
You should run Radioss from within the HyperWorks student edition in the Analysis > Radioss option only
