TIMELINE
01/09/2016 - 31/08/2018
In this project, CFD-DEM simulations were conducted in order to replicate a solid-liquid fluidized bed using coupled EDEM v.2017.2 and ANSYS Fluent v.18.0. Simulation results were validated against the experimental measurements obtained via Electrical resistance tomography (ERT) technique. The influence of various drag models on the simulation results was investigated. In addition, the impact of other particle-fluid interaction forces such as pressure gradient, virtual mass and Saffman lift force on the fluidized bed performance was analyzed. It was also attempted to study the influence of surrounding liquid on the particle-particle contact parameters such as the coefficient of restitution and coefficient of static and rolling frictions. The optimal simulation could reproduce the experimental data accurately with less than 5% discrepancy between the simulation results and experimental data. CFD-DEM results enabled to quantify the magnitude of the contact and particle-fluid interaction forces as a function of the liquid flow rate.

Coupled EDEM-Fluent has a very user friendly interface. The provided tutorials by EDEM are extremely helpful which facilitated me to set up my simulations effortlessly. The powerful post-processing tool included in EDEM enabled me to comprehensively analyze the fluidized bed system.
