How to model and analyse lorents force generated in a system

System with the following description needs to be modelled:

4 permanent magnets arranged in a single ring

Within the magnetic ring, 2 conductors are placed in contact carrying high current in the range of 150-170 A. Conductors are clamped and cannot rotate.

the conductors are the retracted to create a gap in 2-3 mm range. An arc gets created between the tubes. Interaction of magnetic and electric fields causes lorentz force to be generated which acts on the arc.  Schematic is included as attachment.

I am new to simulation and Altair . Thus need help in knowing about a tool and the steps required to analyse this system for the force created and the magnetic field setup in the region. Also need to analyse the effect of current variation on the magnetic field and the lorents force.

    Hi Mukti,

This type of analysis can be done in Flux.

We have a question on place force computation location. Do you want to compute laplace force on Tube or arc?

    Thank you,

    Lavanya

Thanks for your response. The Lorentz force needs to be analysed for the arc. tube is clamped in this arrangement and cannot move.

Also, need to analyses the magnetic field created in this region. Your guidance for this will be indeed helpful to know the simulation of such models using Altair tools.

    Hello Mukti,

Can you provide us with the approximate geometry and material details for this modeling?

I will create a separate request and communicate through the ticket.

    Thank you,

    Lavanya

    Hello Lavanya,

Below are the specifications and a schematic of the process is attached in the 1st post for your reference.

2 Ferrous (MS1018 in this case) Tubes- Outer diameter 27mm, Thickness 3mm are coaxially clamped in contact with each other

4 Alnico Permanent Magnet arranged in a radial ring surrounding the ferrous tube,  figure showing approximate arrangement of magnets is attached.

Current of 150A flown through tubes and then tubes are separated by 1mm.  Arc gets formed in between tubes.

Analysis needs to be done for the following:

    1. Magnetic field created by permanent magnet - axial and radial field

    2. Lorentz force acting on the arc. This force is created by the radial magnetic field and axial electric field

Kindly let me know if any other information may be helpful.

Thank you for taking up this issue and offering to help in understanding Altair tool features. I will be glad to provide any further required specifications. But I basically want to understand how modelling of this and similar systems can be done and how can analysis be made. Awaiting your further help regarding this. Thanks.
