Validation using strain gauges

I want to validate my FE model using strain gauges. I want to compare the strains of the FE model at a point with those of the strain gauges. What is the standard way to make this comparison?

Do I compare the measured value with the strain of the nearest element or is there another way to read out a particular point of my FE model?

It is a non-linear static calculation with large deformations and composite materials.

It looks like there hasn't been an update to Virtual Gauge Director since 2022. Is this still an active/supported software?

VGD is currently in hibernation mode and will not be supporting any enhancements.
