I am Enawgaw from Ethiopia:

Shall I employ EDEM ANSYS Fluent (DEM-CFD) for friction stir welding? Say something tom me, please.

With best regards

    Hi Enawgaw,

It is difficult to confirm based on the name of the application. i.e Friction stir welding.

If you're not trying to represent the melting physics then Definitely EDEM-CFD co-simulation help to meet your requirement.

EDEM helps to create Particulate matter and CFD(Fluent) helps in modeling fluid and thermal behavior i.e heat and mass transfer using Mass Transfer and continuity equations.

If the application i.e friction stir welding is performed for Metallic structures then EDEM may not be the right choice, as EDEM is based on the Discrete Element method and is mostly suitable for particulate matters.

    Thanks,

    Prasad A

    Hi, Prasad.

Thank you for your reply. But there is no melting friction stir welding rather plastic deformation just making the metal 'dough' or  'mud' during the welding process. And the physics involves bulk material flow. So, why not EDEM and its coupling interface is applicable to this phenomenon? Sorry, it may seem taunting speech. But help me.
