Thermal residual Strain of composites

 Hi Everybody, 

 

I am trying to simulate the residual strain on different ply's of a laminate due to different rates of cooldown. I was planning to do this with a heat transfer analysis (transient) but I believe that  composites are not supported in transient heat transfer. 

 

Is it possible to perform a sort of transient analysis applying a Delt Tº in the different time frame? I was thinking to do this with TLOAD1 with excited a TEMPD and a Table1

Is this approach correct?

    WIth transient, it is not possible to apply TEMPD as load type.

    Thank you for your reply. Do you have any suggestion for assessing my simulation? I think the only way to see the influence of the temperature in time on the residual stresses is with a heat transfer analysis. Is this possible with layered elements? Or is there a way to convert this layered shell elements into solid elements? 

     

    I would really appreciate if you can suggest me something

    I was doing some thinking about how to solve this problem with this simulation. Is it possible to do the heat transfer analysis using a composite ply by ply solid modeling? Is going to be more time consuming but maybe this can work. What do you think? 

    Using PSOLID and MAT9ORT

    Hi,

     

    IN GENERAL FOR MOST CARBON/POLYMER systems…As long as your cooldown is “slow enough” to not produce any “dynamic effects”…the problem is time INDEPENDENT.  You can simply perform a static thermal residual with a Delta Temp (Simulation Temp – Cure Temp).

    Thanks for your response. in fact, the problem I am facing deals with a simulation of the effects of fast and slow cooldown in the residual strains in the material. I already create the model with solid elements for each layer. We have two specimens that are are cooled down at different rates (one is cooled down in the oven) and the other one is forced with dry ice. the two specimens are instrumented with strain gages in the different layers and we notice different strains for both process. 

    In this case, Can I still go for a Heat transfer transient?
