Optimization of an assembly using Free shape optimization
Hallo,
i want to know if it is possible to do a free shape optimization on an assembly.
I have a step (like stairs) in a part and it has 2 radii of 2mm each, one above the step and one below the step. Tthe stress is concentrated at these 2 radii. A plate of 3mm is assembled on this step. I know that if i just remove the step and create one big radius and update the 3mm plate, the stress would be reduced. I want to know if i can achieve this using free shape optimization in the solver. My question is can the solver give me one radius (of say 5mm) instead of 2 small? radii.

Hi Vikas,
Is the 3mm plate and fillets belong to same part? If they are different then you will have to define shape variable separately.
If it is same plate along with two small fillets then you can take all of them together and define the free shape variable.
Its difficult to tall without model how the end result be.
You can go ahead and to the set up.

thank you for the response.
The fillets and the plate are firrerent component. Below is the image.
My question is, if i define the free shape variable to the red component near the fillets and let it optimize, don't you think that there will be change in the contacts between the red and the blue part(near the fillets) and may cause some issues due to the change in the geometry and contacts.
As i mentioned earlier, i would like one fillet of radius of (Example 5mm) would it be possible?

With one shape variable, I am hoping that the sharp edge will get smoothened out. It is difficult to tell whether you will get 5mm fillet without trying. So please go ahead do the set up and share the result if it works.
