How to create 8 layer volume mesh on engine book (CFD)

Hello,

I have an engine block similar to the one that Altair has in their example of volume mesh

file:///C:/Program%20Files/Altair/2022.1/SimLab/unity/help/SimLab/english/topics/meshing/Mesh_2DCreate_MeshControl_VolumeLayer.htm

This is my engine block. I want to run an example where I got hot gas in one cylinder and then cold in another (and check the heat transfer and stresses due to heat load). So I thought of running with 1. 3-walls-cells, 5-walls-cells and 8-walls-cells between the cylinders (3 cases). This to see grid-resolution

image

I start with mesh-control and chose the faces on both sides (and we took 8 cells in the example)

image

Then I got to generate surface mesh and take 2 mm surface mesh

image

I can already notice the surface mesh only has 2 cells.... hmm....it does not seem to start well here....

image

Then I got to TET and chose 2 mm and chose "replace the mesh in the existing model".

The result is not good. I don't get 8 cells between the cylinders... what do I do wrong?

    Hi Torbern Klason,

I think the problem is when you define volume layers, your selection entities is surface, but you should use solid selection instead.

You could try to switch to solid > define volume layers > mesh.

    Hello Torbern,

There are two options that might fit your modeling. Please check the Volume Layer Mesh Control and the Region Mesh Control. These options provide control over volume mesh. You can refer to SimLab Help to know how to apply them correctly (For your case, please use the Solid selection Filter).

I hope this answers your question.
