Depending on what is the material of the die; the stress shown in the referred picture lets you know how much mechanical force the die is being exposed to during the extrusion. When you compare the von misses from the figure to the stress-strain curve of the material, you can be able to tell if the mechanical force is enough to produce elastic deformation, plastic deformation or breaking of the die.
