Topology optimization and symmetry constraint on a gear wheel
Hello,
I am pretty new to Hyperworks but have worked myself through most of the tutorials. Until now, everything had pretty much worked out for me, but it’s the topology optimization, which is slowing me down at the moment.
What I’m trying to do is to conduct two topology optimizations on a gear wheel, one where the wheel is driven by a moment in the center, and a second, where it is driven by a normal force on a tooth.
The first had worked pretty well. I’ve reduced the gear wheel to only one tooth (virtually like a pie slice), set up a normal force on the flank and constrained the whole thing via a RBE3 and a CBAR element (6 DOFs). I then completely constrained every single node in a local system to simulate a symmetry constraint (which I’m not sure about being the right way of a symmetry constraint).
Now I’m stuck with the second optimization. I want to add a second constraint, constraining the gear wheel at a second tooth, almost on the opposite side of the tooth with the normal force. The rotational DOF in the center shall be enabled. Is it possible to add a symmetry constraint for this problem? Or would there be another way to optimize the gear wheel?
I hope I’ve explained it comprehensively enough.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello
refer this guide for sysmetry definition
.../help/hwsolvers/hwsolvers.htm?rd1070.htm
constraints defined in disp system so if you want to create abitrary sysmetry, create & assign disp system
but for topology opt, there is 'cyclic' pattern that is able to constrain sysmetrical, you should follow this method. refer to optistruct tutorial for detail

Hello,
thank you for your answer. I've looked for tutorials about the cyclic symmetry, but unfortunately couldn't find any. Do you know which tutorial exactly can help me out?
