As we know, composites can be modeled using both shells and solids. And I want to model a structure using shell and solid element respectively. From the material manual, this parameters can be found: E1=240Gpa;E2=7Gpa;NU12=0.3;G12=4.6Gpa;density=1.64g/cm^3.

I have successfully define MAT8 for 2D shell element.(see figure attached). But I have found some problems while defining MAT9ORT.The parameters in manal is enough for MAT8,but not enough for MAT9ORT(There is a warning in solving). How can I define E3 NU23 NU31 G23 G31 to make the results of two models similar in modal analysis.

Thanks a lot!Wish your rely!

    Hi HuangZhou,

HyperLaminate can only hold MAT2 and MAT8 cards but not MAT9/MAT9ORT.

I can see that you are using HyperLaminate when creating material for solid elements.

Please use material card with MAT9ORT as card image and card edit to enter material properties.

To explain a bit further the difference between MAT8 for Shell and MAT9ORT for Solid Elements:

The MAT9ORT is meant only for solid elements and a general orthotropic material with 3 different 'directions' for the material behaviour. Therefore MAT9ORT will need 9 independent engineering constants for the general usecase. As many materials like composites or sandwiches have only 2 material behaviours (along fibre direction and along matrix material), you might consider setting the same constants (meaning reducing the input values to the values of MAT8) for e.g. E1 and E2 as described in the MAT9ORT help.
