Contact definition - enforce no gap between parts
Hey all,
I would like to define a contact between a sleeve and a clutch body of a transmission synchronisation. The problem is that from the construction department I have received these parts wrongly positioned (the parts penetrate each other). Even if I am trying to set up the right position (no gap between the parts) I am not succesful. It is mainly caused by the FE preprocessor and the geometry.
The aim of this project is to calculate contact stiffness by reading displacement on an RBE element and dividing it by the applied axial force. That is why the position of the parts is really important!
In Permas (the software I work with) there can be a zero gap defined between the surfaces. That means that parts/nodes are laying on each other and no gap is between them. I cannot find such a definition in RADIOSS though. There is the ADJUST command in the next version of RADIOSS but nothing else that I am aware of. This version I do not have.
Do you know how to define this contact correctly? What happens when two elements in RADIOSS penetrate each other. Does one element 'move back' or not? Can I check the contact gap in a post-processor (Hyperview)?
The only thing which came to my mind is to apply only a really small force (to cause almost zero stress/contact pressure) and read the displacement from the RBE element. By this displacement I should move one part to have zero gap in the contact definition.
Thanks a lot!

Hi, what are you using? RADIOSS Bulk or RADIOSS Block? /emoticons/default_wacko.png' alt=''>

Hi,
there is no more Radioss bulk, it is now (again) Optistruct. (HW 12)

Hey, It is RADIOSS Bulk/Optistruct (implicit).

Hi,
there is a parameter MORIENT on Card CONTACT. A switch to the option OVERLAP should account for initially penetrated surfaces in such a way that the surfaces move towards a zero gap

I thought this MORIENT parameter works for shell elemens only. Am I wrong?

Yes, i wasnt sure which type of elements you are using. For Solid Elements the Input for MORIENT is not necessary, the initial penetration is always pushed out. So to get your deck working it should be sufficient to define a CONTACT Card and leave MORIENT blank.
