Is there a way to optimize spacing on linear 2D components; ribs in an aircraft wing (see picture) for example. It would probalby be an iterative process starting at the root.  My thesis advisor thinks this should be something Optistruct can do.

    Hi Davewalker,

could you please explain what do you mean by spacing optmization?

If you are looking to check if any ribs can be removed from the design space, best method is suggest him Pattern Repetition from topology optimization.

Just running topology with compliance would be best method to know if some ribs can be removed.

check the stress distribution in those ribs if they are not taking much load it can removed.

By spacing optimizaiton I mean determining the number and location of ribs, i.e. proper spacing of the ribs.

To clarify what you are suggesting, you are saying to run a topology optimization on the ribs globaly, utilizing pattern repition.  Then just look at the results from the stress analysis to determine which ribs are necessary. Is this correct?

    Hi Dave,

Yes, that is what I meant. Please let me know if that helps you

Well it at least answers my question!

    Thanks for the quick response.
