ESL Structure Optimization

Hello,

I currently started working on my master thesis (I want to optimize a crash structure for a frontal car crash) and would therefore like to perform a topology optimization using the ESL Method.

As far as I am currently informed, it is possible to couple an explicit (crash) calculation using NASTRAN/ABAQUS/LSDYNA with OptiStruct topology optimization.

Since I am quite new to the Hyperworks environment (v14) and didn't find a lot of Information yet, I would greatly appreciate any tutorials/help on how to start with my task.

Do I need to use Hyperstudy for these kinds of tasks?

    You can run optimization using RADIOSS. 

     

    The new feature, Optimization in RADIOSS, makes it easy to set up an optimization problem in RADIOSS Block Format.

    Hi Prakash,

    Thank you for your reply - probably I did not specify my problem close enough,

    I would like to start with a big Solid Mesh Block,  which represents the maximum space the crash structure can occupy. Since I assume a 'conventional' analysis with static loads will not give me the desired results, I would like to use the ESL method, getting the loads from a 'conventional' explicit crash simulation. Unfortunately, I did not find Info whether this is even possible.

    Do you have any information on this? Would it work? Did somebody try similar stuff yet?

    OK. Unfortunately there are no tutorials available to share with you. I will check if I can find a sample model which I can share with you.

    Dear Parakash,

    Thank you for offering me this example File - I think I now know how to set up a model for it to use ESLM, however I cannot start the calculation yet (using my companie's licences until I get my student licence next week) Will the educational licence allow me to run ESLM calculations?

    Yes, you can run an ESLM with student edition but number of nodes is limited to 100,000.

    I am currently working on similar topic, related to the mechanical member member (1-DOF) one end is rotating about motor shaft and other end is subjected to the payload. I would like to get the displacement response from ESL later it should be optimized topologically. Please share your thesis or any useful information I am new to HyperWorks.

    I believe you should try Inspire for this application.

    You can run a mechanism analysis and with the loads calculated, automatically use them to run a topology optimization run.

    This software is looking good, more user friendly with all applications together. Only the concern is will it apply the loading conditions based on ESL (Equivalent Static Load) method?

    It calculates the transient loads from the multibody run, and apply them as multiple static load cases for the analysis/optimization.  You can choose the timesteps to take to the structural model.
