Knowing Abaqus would be a good idea.  However, can you start using Hypermesh (Abaqus solver) with only minimal knowledge of Abaqus ?

As with any solver if you don't have a good understanding of what you are asking it to do you won't get the results you want.  "Garbage in, garbage out" as the old saying goes.

However, setting the profile to Abaqus, pulling in geometry and meshing probably can be done without deep knowledge of Abaqus.  Even then though you want an understand of how to mesh things and what type of elements to use.

So it probably depends on what you are trying to achieve.  So you can certainly get in there and you will probably learn some things but before you look at results from your analysis I would make sure you have a fairly good understanding what you asked for and what Abaqus is giving you.

Good point,  thank you.  I have been doing something similar.  However, all the meshing, geometry, and set-up is done with Hypermesh, I'm also using an Abaqus solver.  The only time I am reminded/use of Abaqus is when I create the INP file.
