From 3D to 2D in simlab for FLUX simulation

Is there any way to obtain a 2D geometry to simulate in Flux from a complex 3D CAD model? For instance, by creating a cutting plane on the 3D model and designating the resulting faces for simulation or something similar.

Additionally, I am assuming that SimLab is the tool to perform this task, but I am open to using any other tool if I am mistaken.

    Hi Gaizka,

We have a video on how to obtain 2D geometry from 3D in Flux.

    Hope this helps.

    Thank you,

    Lavanya

The downside is that it's a fairly complex CAD that I would like to avoid using through Flux, at least in its full version. That's why I thought of SimLab, understanding that it is the right tool to centralize this type of simplified operations. There is no Altair tool for this kind of tasks?

In SimLab, you can use the option under Geometry < Body < From Faces, to create separate 2D bodies from 3D CAD.

Thank you for sharing this option. How do I generate the faces to then apply the method explained in From Faces.pdf ?

    Hi there,

Whenever I have a complex geometry that can be analyzed using a 2D X-Y or axisymmetric analysis; I prefer to obtain the 2D cross section through a CAD software such as SolidWorks or another similar. If you are using SolidWorks it is simple to obtain the 2D section from a 3D body by section the volumetric bodies at the area of interest, then go to save as>.dxf and follow the instructions from the new window that will pop out. Afterwards, simply go to open Flux, look for the top menu bar project>import>import geometry>import geometry from a DXF file; then proceed to upload the DXF file you created from SolidWorks, at the drop down menu "coordinate system to attach the imported geometry" choose XY1 (default), next at the drop down menu "import in 3D or convert 2D" choose 2D, then "length unit in the file (meter or conversion factor)" choose conversion factor and in the next drop down menu "optional convestion factor with meter of the length unit" type 0.001 if the DXF was imported in metric units. Finally click ok and you will see your 2D geometry imported in Flux.

    Hope this comment helps!
