The Electrostatics Model of EDEM 2023

When I use the electrostatics model of EDEM 2023, is the electrostatic force between the particles and the geometry calculated? Also, is the electrostatic force between the particle and the geometry calculated based on the image force? If not, how do I add the image force of the particles and the geometry?

Thanks for a lot.

    Hi Alice,

The electrostatic force is a force between particles only. You can check the equation used to calculate that force here: https://help.altair.com/edem/Creator/Physics/Additional_Models/Electro.htm

Could you clarify what you mean by image force? I'm not sure if EDEM has a built-in model to calculate that force, however you can write an API to calculate that. You can learn more on how to write APIs here: https://help.altair.com/edem/Programming_Guide.htm

    Best regards,

    Renan

    Thanks for your reply.

Since the electrostatic force model calculates the force between particles, why is it that when I generate just one particle and have it collide with a wall and thus carry a charge, the particle will have a value for the electrostatic force? Is this electrostatic force the electrostatic force between the particle and the wall?

A charged particle near a conducting wall surface could cause a charge re-distribution and experience an attractive image force due to the particle charge and the induced charge on the wall surface.

    Hi Alice,

Can you share a screenshot of particle to geometry contact models you are using in your simulation?
    image

The electrostatic force I shared is only available as a particle body force, which means it only affects particles. For particle to geometry contacts, there's the tribocharging model, which you can find more information about here: https://help.altair.com/edem/Creator/Physics/Additional_Models/Tribocharging.htm

I use  the tribocharging model for particle-geometry interaction to transfer charge. when  I only use the tribocharging model, there is no electrostatic force. After adding the electrostatic model for particle body force, the particle has a value for the electrostatic force (only use one particle)

Since the tribochaging model doesn't calculate the electrostatic force and the electrostatic model only calculates the force between the particles, where did I get the electrostatic force received by this individual particle (in this case a box containing a particle)?

    Hi Alice

The electrostatic force also calculates the force between particles and the surface. You can exclude that by checking this box.
