how to configure a run file (control cards) drop fall run

Hi guys,

just an easy question - I am newbie on this. I have a water tap and I am trying to run a drop fall test. I need to configure the controls cards but somehow I am still getting ERRORs. I have already adjusted the gravity and initial velocity so I dont have to let it fall down form 1 meter. I just need to see what happen during 5 second or probably less (if any one of you suggest a better time).

Could anyone of you give me advice what to consider in the control cards for such kind of cases?. I also need to include contact energies as well as stresses and strains.

Thank you very much in advance and hope to understand this solver a bit more while getting your advice.

Sincerely

Sebastian.

Obviouly I am configuring something bad but I cant find the inconsistencies. Below is the output info. Properties and Materials are defined, the elements trias3 and quads4 also checked as shell3n and shell4n. Material information for steel is rho 7.85e-9 and E 210000. Thanks again in advance for the support

    Hi Sebastian,

The RADIOSS solver is executed in two steps:

    1.Starter
    2.Engine
The Starter reads a Runname_0000.rad file that contains the model definition, that is all the details of the model (e.g. nodes, elements, properties) will be in the starter file. The Starter diagnosis possible errors in the model defined and outputs a binary restart file. The Engine executes the actual computation. The Engine file contains the run controls (e.g. termination time, animation output requests). The Engine produces output files for animation and plotting (time history). These are provided using the control cards.

I'm attaching a similar drop test tutorial. Please go through the same so that you can easily understand the control cards used for every output required. Model file is also attached for your practise.

Using /ANIM/VECT/CONT card you can output the contact forces.

There are multiple modelling errors in the model. Ensure property is assigned to the parts defined.

Also, go to 2D panel and select all elements (for 1D and 2D-3D options),click update and run the simulation. If you are still stuck with errors please share the model file.

thank you very much for your answer!

I will check the file and let you know if when copying the configuration (control card) the model works or not.

I found out the problem and since I was working with Ansa for the meshing, I had a problem while outputting the file to RADIOSS. So the configuration of the properties and materials was uncompleted. I corrected it but now the solver is pointing out problems with the Hourglasses for 3-nodes shell elements. I thought lshell 12 (full integrated) might solve the problem.

I come back with the model in case of being necessary ;).

    Hi George,

unfortunately, I was not able to run my simulation. I have changed the configuration of my tied contacts to solid_surface instead of shell elements. The problem with the Hourglass is gone. However, it should be possible to combine 3- and 4-nodes elements with solids with a proper hourglass formulation?

Please, receive attached the model and it would be great if you can take a look of this and tell why is not working now. I would very appreciate it!

One more question, how can I create with Hypermesh revolute joints or universal joints?

    Thanks for your support!

    Sincerely

    Sebastian.

    Hi Sebastian,

I'm not able to download the file. It's showing an error. I think it was not properly uploaded. Can you please upload again or please share the model through the secure dropbox link in my signature?.

It's possible to control the hourglass. In property card use Ishell=24 and keep N=5.

how can I create with Hypermesh revolute joints or universal joints

The easiest way to model joints in RADIOSS is to use a /PROP/TYPE8 spring. Provide high stiffness to all degrees of freedom those are fixed and zero stiffness in the direction which you want to be free.Unfortunately no webinars are available on this topic as of now, but a sample solver deck is attached for your reference.

    Hi George,

apparently the file is too large (3MB), do you have an email address to share it with you?

Thanks again for the support with the joints and hourglass; I am gonna check it now!

    Sincerely

    Sebastian.
