Size Optimization
Hi,
I have attached model here that I want to optimize .
This model has 3 regions. 1-> 17 plies each 0.02' thickness. 2-> core ply of 0.3' and 3 plies both sides of 0.02' thickness. 3-> core ply of 0.6' and 3 plies both sides of 0.02'.
3 PCOMPP are used for above 3 regions.
The maximum deflection from static run is 0.0191'.
My aim is to limit the deflection to 0.010'.
Constraint : Ply shape and ply thickness should not be changed.
We can add plies with same shape and same thickness.
Do we need to link design variable for 3 different PCOMPP? If yes then what should be the approach for that.
Please guide me the procedure of the optimization to solve this problem.

Hi Deepak,
My idea would be to run a Size optimization with the manufacturing thickness on each ply which is equal to the current thickness of the respective plies and also a laminate thickness limit.

I dont think you need to link the DVs since the maximum displacement occurs at the inner region.

One more query.
If i dont want to add honycomb plies in existing model. I just want to add or remove facesheet plies.
How shall i put that constraint in HM?

Hi Prakash,
I am trying shuffle option. after shuffling Core ply is coming at top of all the fachsheet plies. I want core to remain in middle only.
Could you please suggest method for that.

Hi Deepak,
Use RANGE option in DSHUFFLE and define the starting and ending ply IDs which participates in shuffling.
You may need couple of DSHUFFLE cards in order to get the stack as required.

I tried method mentioned by you and it worked.
My problem is , i want to reduce displacement by optimization. I met my allowable displacement by sizing , but again it has gone up after shuffling.
What should be my appraoch of optimization if i want to meet certain displacement value after sizing and shuffling.

When you are modelling for Size optimization what is the laminate type?
is it smear, total, symmetric, etc...?

Its total, I did't use symmetry as i have a core in middle of the model.
