what is the difference between .fem and .hm file in hypermesh?

Briefly:
FEM file:
- model file for the solver
- ASCII (text) file that you can open in any text editor
- includes all the solver cards
- does NOT include geometry, only FEA entities (elems, nodes, forces...)
- retro-compatibility with different HyperMesh versions (except newer cards)
- as it is a text file can benefit of compressing with a good compression ratio
HM file:
- model file for usage in HyperMesh/HyperWorks
- binary file (.hm) that can only be opened in HM/HW
- may include FEA and GEOMETRY entities
- newer files cannot be opened in older versions
- usually not so compressible
