Screw Into Material

Hi Radioss-Team,

Is it possible to insert/cut a screw into a bulk material. We try to compute the placement strength of a screw but since the insertion causes damage to the bulk-material we need to take this into account. So what material card could accomplish such a simulation. Important is that the damage accumulation is correctly mapped.

    Hi Jonas,

We have a similar screwing process example available with the model file. You can go through it at https://altairuniversity.com/learning-library/radioss-screwing-process-sample/

Along with you can add /FAIL/BIQUAD failure card which is a simplified non-linear strain based failure criteria with linear damage accumulation. The application of failure cards  really depends on what failure data you have available. Please go through the Help menu on these failure cards available in RADIOSS and please remember that to use more advanced failure models you need to have data to use with them

    Hi George,

I'm not 100% sure if you correctly understood my question. The example you sent me is more like a screw fixation of two plates. However, In my application I try to have a closed bulk material and a screw touching it. Then the simulation would start to spin the screw and to push the screw against the bulk material. This would cause the material to split up and the screw is cut into the bulk material. This is more like a drilling process, but without cutting out the material, but more pushing the material to the side. Is something like this possible to accomplish with Radioss?

    Thanks for your support, Best

    Jonas

    Hi,

You could try using SPH for modelling the bulk material for this application.

    Hi George,

What about using element failure(deletion using a fine/small mesh?

    Hi Jonas,

You can try with the above approach or you can introduce a failure property card also.

Can you share a snapshot of the model setup, so that I'll check and let you know any other possibilities.
