What is the reason why there is no option to plot strain (von-mises strain, true strain, etc) as contour? It is only possible for plastic strain.

Did you try with /ANIM/SHELL/TENS/STRAIN/ALL keyword in engine file, which will generate animation files containing shell tensor data for strain result.
Normally for a non-linear analysis we are interested in the plastic strain developed in the model, which is nothing but the deformation/damage happened due to the dynamic loading in the component.
