I have noticed that if I don't connect the output of the DSPInterface block to a 'plot' it does not execute when 'run' is given. Please advise.

VisSim only executes a block if it is observed by being connected to a signal consumer. This can be a plot, display, meter, histogram, export, PWM, etc. If you want to run the DSPInterface block without connecting it to a consumer block, make sure it has no outputs by unchecking theShow CPU Utilization option.
