Von Mises Stress for PBEAM

Hello everyone,

I have a question regarding the stress output of PBEAM elements.

When using PBEAML, I can obtain normal stresses, shear stresses, and von Mises stresses at the stress recovery points without any issues.

However, when I define a PBEAM with a custom beam section using Engine: FEM and specify stress recovery points, I do not get any von Mises stress output.

In HyperView, I only see “Element Stresses (1D)”, which include axial and longitudinal stresses, but no von Mises results.

Is there a way in HyperView to obtain von Mises stresses for PBEAM elements?

Hi,

I can understand that the image I shared made the discussion confusing. I just did little more digging and found that if you need vonmises stress, you need to have PBARL/PBEAML as property. This also confirms the image I shared. With PBEAM property, the result output is axial and longitudinal stress which you have already observed.

• PBEAM Property: This classical beam property outputs force/moment resultants and section stresses based on beam theory. However, it does not always compute or display a scalar von Mises stress as a default elemental field in post-processing. This is why von Mises stress may appear unavailable for PBEAM.
• PBEAML Property: This is an integrated, section beam formulation that includes shear flexibility and detailed section integration. PBEAML provides a directly computed von Mises stress result for 1D beams. This richer stress output is why von Mises stress is available for PBEAML but not for PBEAM.

If you need von Mises stress for PBEAM, you can either post-process the stress components to compute it or switch to PBEAML for direct output.
