Von mises VS Prinicpal stresses

Hii everyone,

I have doubts regarding which failure theory should I use.

I have some papers in which they evaluate von mises for static loads and principal stresses for fatigue load cases irrespective of material type ductile or brittle eg: SS304

I referred to some papers they say use von mises for ductile and principal for brittle materials. Its kinda confusing.

I need to perform Random Vibration Analysis in steels. What should I check for von mises or principal stresses. But from what I Know Von mises is generally evaluated against yield but this is a fatigue load cases and we have fatigue limit. Which stresses should I prefer and what to evaluate against.

I also have to Damage calc, what stresses i should use von mises or principal stress. Is it material dependent or type of loading or both.

I'm kinda new to FEA, If possible please explain in simple terms.

For random vibration and fatigue analysis in steels such as SS304, von Mises stress is generally the preferred criterion because steels are ductile materials, and their failure behavior is governed more by distortion energy than by maximum normal stress. The confusion usually comes from the fact that many papers report both von Mises and principal stresses for different purposes. In static analysis, von Mises stress is compared against yield strength for ductile materials, while principal stress is more suitable for brittle materials where failure occurs due to tensile cracking. In fatigue problems, however, the goal is not simply to check yielding but to evaluate how cyclic stresses accumulate damage over time. For ductile metals under multiaxial cyclic loading, fatigue calculations are commonly based on an equivalent stress measure derived from von Mises stress and then compared against fatigue properties such as the endurance limit or S-N curve rather than yield strength. Principal stresses may still be useful for studying crack initiation direction, weld fatigue, or brittle behavior, but for general random vibration fatigue analysis of steel components, von Mises-based equivalent stress is the standard and most appropriate choice for both stress evaluation and damage calculations.
