Differences among hm and hw tools

Product/Topic Name : HyperMesh, HyperMeshDesktop, HyperWorksDesktop, HyperMeshCFD, HyperWorksCFD

I need help to understand the differences among the tools HyperMesh, HyperMeshDesktop, HyperWorksDesktop, HyperMeshCFD, HyperWorksCFD and why are the ribbons all meshed up among versions?

It is very confusing.

If I understand correctly, I think hypermeshCFD is meant to be a replacement for hyperworkscfd and both cfd tools are smaller versions with limited functionalities of hypermesh, while hypermeshdesktop is all-inclusive platform containing various hypermesh view profiles.

And all of that are shadows of the legacy version 2019, having the same engine in the background but limited access to original capabilities and meshed up, full of bugs, unfriendly and incomprehensible GUI!!!

Which one is meant to be discontinued, and which is officially supported and developed and meant to be the mainstream future tool?

Meaning, which one should I invest time in learning again and where can I find documentation and training material that isn’t outdated and version incompatible?

Hi @FSD,

I believe your main confusion stems from the renaming that took place in 2023, along with the drastic interface improvements, where the HyperWorks Desktop name was replaced with HyperMesh Desktop.

For the most recent releases of these products, and thus the most capable releases, you can always go to the Altair Marketplace and search for HyperMesh:

As for training, you can search for HyperMesh or HyperMesh CFD at our Altair Learning page to browse through several different eLearning modules to help you get started on your HyperMesh journey.

Additional tutorials can also be found in the Help Documentation that comes along with your installation.

Hi Adam,

Thank you for your reply, but unfortunately this is not the case.

1) All of the tools that I mentioned are still available in the installation directory and can be accessed under ../scripts/

2) The learning page is outdated, still providing material for older versions like HyperMeshCFD which is a mixture of versions from 2022, 2024, 2024.1, hmcfd, hwcfd, etc. All the ribbons and tools are scrambled, mixed, misplaced, missing…

It is a big mess that makes the confusion even bigger!

Training for older versions of Altair products are still available on the eLearning site to provide Customers with appropriate training depending on what version they are currently using.

If you are trying to complete training that was created using an older version of your product and are having difficulties, you can always cite a specific step in a training module here in a new Discussion and someone can show you the equivalent steps to take in your current version.

In addition, if you are looking for a certain command in the Ribbon but are having trouble locating it, you can use the search tool located in the upper right corner and look for the command you need:

Hi Adam,

I went through the “find tool” option but most of the tools, basic or advanced that I used in the past are not there. That is why I am using the term “missing” or “not accessible”! Also hmcfd does not have the "find tool" option.

Do those webinars offer more insight than the “How to” youtube channel? Because I’ve seen the interface migration videos and they are very basic and not very informative.

But we are getting off topic here.

At least let me understand the purpose of all the tools that I mentioned and are in the installation directory. Should I ignore all hyperWORKS scripts and focus only on hm and hmcfd?

And why should I use hmcfd for geom and mesh preparation which is missing so many things and is so bad and not have only hm?
