Solenoid model in FEKO 2024.1

Hi. My name is Mohsin Jamil and I am a graduate student at the College of William & Mary. I am working on a project in which I have to compute the magnetic field inside a solenoid carrying a current 100 mA. The number of turns are 139, and solenoid length is 60mm. The two ends(free ends) of the solenoid should be connected to a current source. I modeled solenoid via helix icon but could not attach the source at the ends of the solenoid and could not find any resources related to this problem. How can I attach source and ports to my solenoid to do calculations of the magnetic field inside the solenoid. Which method will be used ? Is MOM suitable method for this model? I am waiting for your reply.

Hello Mohsin,

To add a source to the solenoid coil,

Connect two ends with an additional wire
Define a wire port in the middle of the additional wire
Add a voltage source to the wire port
Add a load whose impedance is 1 MOhm (1e6 Ohm) to the same wire port
Change the voltage source's magnitude to 1M (1e6) → to ensure the source current is 1 A.

Regarding solver, MoM(default solver) should be best, since it is a wire structure and the operating frequency is very low.

Hi. Thank you so much. I used additional wires to make a closed loop but I used Voltage magnitude 0.9 V because that is giving me current 119.3 mA that I was looking for my solenoid. I set the reference impedance to 0 ohms and phase o degrees. The things worked well and I computed the magnetic field. Now I have a problem of attaching port to my secondary coil that is lies axially inside the primary coil. I tried to attach segment port on its ends but CADFEKO gives error 180. In 3D view when I zoom for port , one end of the coil is showing up (4.051,-6.83e-14,40) but the end of the coil is actually (4.051,0,40). I don't know why CADFEKO is giving this.

sorry voltage I used for the primary was 0.1812 V instead of 0.9V but that is not problem now as primary coil has modeled well. The issue is now secondary coil.

I modified your model as below and attached here.

simple-model2_mod.cfx

Added additional wire to the 2nd coil for the 2nd wire port.
Added a load (1e6 Ohm) to the first wire port.
Modified the voltage source's magnitude with 0.1812e6.
Change the solver from MLFMM to MoM.
Check "double precision".

Please solve it on your side.

Thank you. It worked. I will add another secondary coil now that will be attached to the previous secondary in series, then will measure induced voltage across the two secondary coils. These coils are identical and oppositely wound to have a gradiometer configuration.
