The Community Team would like to introduce the October Champion of the Month, Roger DeAngelis @Roger DeAngelis_21630.
Roger’s path began in the early 1960s, when he bought his first ebony-and-ivory K & E slide rule. In high school, he was drawn to math, physics, and Newton’s laws of motion. He attended the University of Vermont (UVM), where he studied math and physics. His favorite course was Electricity and Magnetism and the study of Maxwell’s Equations.
His interest in computing began with the IBM 1620, 1130, and 360 systems, using FORTRAN II and assembler. After earning his degree in Mathematics, he worked at the UVM Computer Center, where he gained experience with IBM large systems and the PDP-10. His first hands-on experience with smaller machines came with the Altair 8800, which required manually entering a short bootloader program into empty memory using front-panel switches before loading the BASIC interpreter from paper tape.
DeAngelis completed a master’s degree in statistics at Penn State University and later joined IBM’s Future Large Systems Design Group. There, he focused on performance analysis for future hardware and software designs and was first introduced to the SAS language around 1976.
"As new tools like R and Python emerged, I incorporated them alongside SAS. These days, I prefer working with Altair SLC because of its powerful macro language, robust named pipe implementation for integrating with other languages, and direct memory access through load, store, and pointer commands."
Roger has been married to his wonderful wife for 55 years and they have two lovely daughters. He enjoys biking and hiking around Tucson, Arizona, and collecting rocks and minerals.
Please join the Community team to congratulate Roger DeAngelis @Roger DeAngelis_21630 and thank him for sharing his extensive knowledge, especially his Altair SLC expertise, with other members of the Community. Here is a link to the prodigious wealth of information that Roger has shared on the Community.
