Pin Bearing Test (Composites) Radioss Solver

Hi
I am trying to do a very simple pin loaded test according to the ASTM standards in composites using Radioss.

I have modelled my composite with MATLAW25 and PCOMPP property. For the pin, i use MATLAW1 and PSHELL property. To establish contact between the two i use INTER 7. I use IMPVEL to move the pin at 200 mm/min speed.

Ideally the bottom edge and the top edge of the composite must be clamped so that the pin moves through the composite and you have bearing failure.

But no matter what i do, what settings i change in the contact or my property, i face error 207.

I know from experiments that the test lasts about 5 seconds, but my solver basically fails after just 0.3 s. I dont know what is wrong. I have attached my files, any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Try these: The main issue was that you had fully constrained the nodes of the elements you were trying to damage, so they couldn't move, the incompatibility between the rigid pin and effectively rigid part resulted in the error, your added mass was also very large due to timestep. The attached model has the BCS changed on the pin loaded end to constrain only Z movement and X,Y rotations, and the timestep is reduced, I also added a TauMax of 10x timestep on the hashin criteria to allow it to erode elements. I didn't run this to end so you may have issues still later on, but this is at least going further than yours was before and damage is being initialised.

    Hi,
    Some comments about your model:

    • The nodes of the ply plate around the pin are locked in all degrees of freedom (DOFs 1-6), meaning they will remain stationary
    • IMPVEL value appears to be set too high, causing the nodes around the pin to move too quickly and resulting in deformation only in the elements surrounding the pin

    Best regards,

    Hi

Thanks for the reply. I need to test my model at high speeds. So essentially what i'm trying to do is trying to predict failure under high speed loading.

Second, i also tried modifying the BCs to just clamp the top edge and the bottom so the pin moves through the composite thereby achieving a bearing failure. But even with that, i see error 207.

There are no penetrations in the model, no warnings, nothing but i get the error 207 after the solver has run for a couple seconds. I have tried every single permutation and combination but i get the same error. I'm not sure why.

I left this running over the easter weekend, it ran to termination at 3s:
