function expressions of Generate Attribute operator

I am struggling to understand the function expression examples provided in the Generate Attribute operator. I can see that there are a couple of text types used in these examples. I assume that one format refers to text that I must adapt for my specific use and the other is text that is part of the expression. However, I still get confused. I am wondering if there is a reference resource that can provide more clarity.
