how to use GA for feature selection without any model?

hi All, I have large set of independents variables and want to reduce them so am using GA to optimize the set to give me the most valuable variables but it need to use model , when try it with NN it took more than an hour and didnot finsh so I want to know how to use it without any model then take those new set as my new dataset and apply the NN again
