How to handle accurate the results?

Hi everyone,

I have some questions:

  1. How to calculate average thickness (what it is based on?)
  2. What is the most important factor in casting (casting parameters, material (density, HTC, solid fraction))?
  3. How to know if the results are accurate or not? Because different element sizes will have different results (porosity location, shrinkage volume...)
  4. What is the most important result? Which results affect the remaining results?

Thanks

    Hello Brian,

    Here are my answers:

    1) Ave. thickness is automatically calculated based on the casting component. However, you can force assign different values to Ave. thickness to control the speed/accuracy slider.

    2) Every factor is crucial when you are performing casting simulation against real part. Design, process, parameters, material properties, and meshing as well.

    3) You start getting accurate results when you have at least 3 layers of meshing over the thickness. More fine mesh(4 layers or above) than this will lead you to higher accuracy.

    4) Some of the results like, Last Air, Velocity, Solid fraction, Thermal stress analysis, Micro-porosity, and Total shrinkage porosity are probably the most commonly used result types to avoid casting defects.

    Hope this helps,

    Regards,

    Hello Milan

How do I force "use volume meshing with layers" to mesh 4 layers or more? As use volume meshing with layers (under preferences) is only 3 layers.

In what cases should I use both, "use volume meshing with layers" AND "auto refinement"?

In what cases should I use only one of the options?

    Hello Uri,

Certainly. Auto refinement can help you with the desired number of layers. See the images below.

You can use only the volume mesh option when at least 3 layers are required. And you can use auto refinement when specific numbers of layers are required.

    Thanks.

    please answer,

In what cases should I use both, "use volume meshing with layers" AND "auto refinement"?

In what cases should I use only one of the options? and which one?

    Hello Uri,

As I mentioned in my previous reply, You can use only the volume mesh option when at least 3 layers are required. And you can use auto refinement when specific numbers of layers are required. Also, the regular mesh should be used in regular cases and auto refinement when you are losing accuracy or losing material (visually) in any place using a default mesh.
