Tsai failure criterion

Hi there,

I don't really understand how Tsai criterion works. I know that failure happens when FI reaches 1, but inside Hyperview -> Composite Failure Index (s) there are two options:

-Failure Index: in my model this shows results below 1 at all points of the geometry. 

-Ply(s) with Maximum FI: this, however, shows results above 1 at pretty large portions of it. What does it exactly mean? Is the whole laminate going to fail? Is a single ply going to fail? Or instead, it means that a single ply would fail if there were not other plies in the laminate.

Thank you very much for your response, but having read it I am still not certain about how to interpret the results obtained in my model. 

If "Failure Index is below" 1 but "Ply(s) with Maximum FI" is above 1, what is going to happen?

And finally, is there any way to know which ply is the one with Maximum FI?

Hi Fernando, 

 

The "Ply with Maximum FI" option identifies which ply (id) has the max FI. In your case, ply 15 has the highest FI with a value of 0.596.
