Java 8 for RapidMiner Studio is not officially supported, but known to run in most cases. Using a JRE installed on OSX can be tricky due to different default installation paths depending on the installed version. The new launcher for RapidMiner Studio can automatically detect most of the JRE installations and start RapidMiner Studio. Please download the installer linked in this post: https://support.rapidminer.com/customer/portal/questions/9531381-java-1-6-issue-when-installing-rapidminer-studio-on-mac
If the new launcher does not work for you, I recommend to install the JDK package for Java 7. In most cases you are done by just installing this version of Java. If you still run into issues please have a look at the following page: https://support.rapidminer.com/customer/portal/articles/1516354-how-do-i-configure-mac-os-to-use-java-7-instead-of-java-6

Perfect Helge! No matter how I installed the JRE (Oracle Java) RapidMiner wouldn't find it and using terminal I could find no trace of a JVM. But after installing the JDK, RapidMiner runs and I can plainly see the JVM using terminal and finder. Thank you!0
