How do I upgrade to a new version of Altair SLC?
How do I upgrade to a new version of Altair SLC?
(n.b. For a z/OS Mainframe please follow the guidance in our z/OS installation guide for Altair SLC.)
Check if you need a new license - see notes below. Make sure your license is ready before you start.
Download the new version from the AltairOne Marketplace website. Workbench and SLC are two separate downloads.
For a single-user Windows PC or laptop, simply install the new MSI. The old version will be replaced by the new version.
If you are administering a server for multiple Altair SLC users then some downtime should be scheduled. One hour should normally be more than sufficient. Follow these steps:
- Log into the machine where Altair SLC is installed as the Administrator or root user.
- In order to be able to roll back in the case of problems, make sure you have the installation packages ready for re-installing the current version of Altair SLC (or make a complete copy of the current installation files).
- Check that Altair SLC is not in use by any users. If necessary, terminate any redundant processes, or reboot.
- Make a backup copy of altairslc.cfg and/or altairslc_local.cfg if you have changed them. (Also wps.cfg and wps_local.cfg.)
- Uninstall the old version of SLC and then install the new version.
- (Re)license the machine if necessary by following the Altair Units licensing instructions. The license utility and documentation are bundled with the Altair SLC release.
NOTES:
MAJOR VERSIONS
WPS 3, WPS 4, SLC 2023, SLC 2024.
Note 1: When changing major version you will need a new license.
Note 2: WPS 3 and WPS 4 were licensed using a SETINIT / WPSKEY license file from the World Programming website. From version 4.4 onwards licensing is done by the Altair Units licensing system - either a file, an on-premise license daemon, or a connection to AltairOne. You may arrange this with your Altair Sales Account Manager well in advance.
Note 3: WPD file format version also changes so either conduct an acceptance test on a test system before committing, or back up all data files.
MINOR VERSIONS
WPS 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 5.23.1, 5.23.2, etc.
Note 4: Changing minor version does not require a new license.
Note 5: When users first use a new minor version, their Workspace folders are updated the first time they are used in the new version. Users may want to make a backup of their workspace folders - but workspace folders can be rebuilt in the case of a roll-back (by importing the contents to a re-created workspace folder).
