Crashbox are an important component in Crashworthiness. They allow to dissipate efficiently kinetic energy coming from a crash situation. They are widely used in automotive industry. OptiStruct Explicit enables to perform such studies efficiently.

The goal of this article is to showcase OptiStruct capabilities with a simple crashbox example. The following studies were performed:

  • Different integration schemes have been evaluated.
  • Comparisons have been conducted between Radioss & OS explicit. Results are consistent between the two softwares.
  • A sensitivity study wrt number of cores has been conducted. Results are not sensitive to the number of cpus used, which is good.

This article includes:

  • 1 ready-to use OptiStruct model
    • Altair OptiStruct version is V2024 (and compatible with later versions)
    • The Unit System is in (kg, mm, ms, GPa)
  • 1 ready-to-use Radioss model in Dyna format
  • 1 session file to output results efficiently
  • A report with a detailed description of the model and the results of the study.
